SPG 1947: A Creekside Cigar Made in His Father’s Honor

Creekside Podcast Ep. 063: SPG 1947: A Creekside Cigar Made in His Father’s Honor

From Creekside Podcast Ep. 063: A Cigar Made To Remember A Great Man, aired Aug 21, 2026. Recorded at Creekside Cigar Co. in Maineville, Ohio.

In this episode, Dave sits down with Mike G, a familiar face in the Creekside community, to introduce SPG 1947, a Creekside Custom made in honor of Mike’s late father. The conversation moves from his father’s life and love of cigars to the blend, packaging and meaning behind the cigar. It’s a personal story about how a cigar can hold memories and bring people together.

Why did Creekside make SPG 1947?

The idea began with stories about Mike’s father: a larger-than-life person who served in the Marine Corps, traveled widely and loved people, cigars and fine wine. He enlisted at 17, served in Vietnam as a forward observer and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant. Later, he built a career in car sales and worked with Porsche and Audi.

Mike’s father also introduced him to cigars. On a trip to Cabo San Lucas, he encouraged Mike to slow down and enjoy a cigar together. They shared cigars again on a later trip, including a Montecristo No. 2. For Mike, those moments became part of a lasting connection to cigars and to his father.

Dave and Mike began talking about the project while Mike’s father was still alive. Dave brought samples for Mike to try, then worked with the factory on another round of blending after a trip to the Dominican Republic. Mike chose the blend that felt closest to the kind of cigar his father would have enjoyed.

What is the SPG 1947 cigar blend like?

Dave and Mike describe SPG 1947 as a medium-plus cigar with an Ecuador Habano wrapper and binder, along with a little ligero in the filler. They also mention Criollo 98. Their first impressions include toastiness, a touch of chocolate sweetness, and a bright citrusy, floral quality. Cedar and wood provide a core, while the filler brings some spice. Mike also notices creaminess, and later describes toasted almond and milk chocolate.

The cigar they smoke during the conversation has arrived that morning, so they frame the session as enjoying it together rather than judging it. The production was rolled in February, and Dave says it will have about six and a half months of age by its planned release. Mike recalls liking an earlier sample even more after several months of resting, and expects the cigar to continue developing with age.

The size was chosen with Mike’s father in mind. Mike says his father loved Lancero cigars, but describes this vitola as a hearty, well-suited size for the blend, with a slow smoke potentially lasting around an hour and a half.

How does the packaging honor Mike’s father?

The design brings together references to Porsche, classic Habanos and Mike’s father. Dave worked with Creekside designer Logan, sharing the story and scans of a page from his father’s journal. The journal page comes from a visit to the El Corojo farm in Cuba and is incorporated into the packaging. Dave says the visual direction was meant to feel like a heritage emblem that could belong on an older Porsche.

The band uses a very dark British racing green around the edge, with gold foil in the center. The name combines Mike’s father’s initials with his birth year, 1947. Mike sees the result as timeless and personal, and appreciates that his father’s handwriting is part of the presentation. The first 50 cigars off the production table were also sent to Mike without bands, along with a note from the factory.

When will SPG 1947 be available?

Dave says the planned launch is September 10, in the Creekside store and online. He also describes it as the store members’ Creekside Customs release, with the intention of making it available for everyone to enjoy. The episode looks ahead to an evening centered on the cigar and the things Mike’s father loved, including good company.

That idea captures the heart of the conversation. Mike describes his father as someone who wanted people to succeed and who loved bringing people together. He hopes the cigar will prompt smokers to remember people they care about and share time with them. For Dave and Mike, SPG 1947 is not only a blend to discuss; it is a way to keep a person’s story present in a community built around cigars and friendship.
