Crowned Heads Belgian Blue returns for its third straight year, this time in its most compact size yet: a 5 1/4 x 54 box-pressed robusto extra. Named after the famously muscular Belgian Blue cattle breed, the blend pairs a dark Mexican San Andrés wrapper with an Ecuadorian binder and a filler of Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos. It's handmade at D'Hatuey Tabacos in Estelí, Nicaragua, and limited to just 2,500 boxes of 12 worldwide.
What sets Belgian Blue apart is its recipe: 75 percent of the blend comes from ligero, the thick, oily leaves at the top of the tobacco plant. In Jon Huber's words, it was "never about chasing strength for strength's sake." It was blended for flavor and intensity first. Expect a full-bodied, spice-forward smoke with layers of pepper, leather, oak and molasses, a strong retrohale, and a refined balance that keeps all that power in check.
The shorter robusto extra delivers the full Belgian Blue experience in less time, making it a great after-dinner smoke for anyone who likes their cigars bold. With the 2024 and 2025 editions long gone from most shelves, this one won't last. Pair it with a high-proof bourbon, a peaty Scotch, or a dark espresso.
