Description
The Fat Matt is Lure's follow-up to The Nereus, and it carries a good story. Company founder Lou Cross named it after Matt, his son's future father-in-law and a new member of the family who took up cigars and spends his time pulling peacock bass out of the South Florida canals behind his house. That's the artwork you'll find on the band and bundle: peacock bass, bright and unmistakable.
The blend is a chunky 5 x 54 Robusto Grande built around a rustic, chestnut-brown sun-grown Habano wrapper from Ecuador. Underneath sits a bold ligero binder from Estelí, with fillers pulled from Estelí and Jalapa in Nicaragua plus earthy Jamastrán and sweeter Talanga leaf from Honduras.
Expect a medium-bodied smoke that opens on freshly roasted coffee and a hint of citrus, then moves into warm baking spices. A touch of white pepper adds zest on the finish without taking over. Coffee, citrus, spice, and a little sweetness stay balanced from the first draw to the last.
This is a limited release. Only 4,000 cigars were made, and Creekside is one of a small group of retailers carrying them. When they're gone, they're gone.
